Work Sharp Is My Pick for the Best Knife Sharpening System

Like many of my fellow Warriors and Sheepdogs, I have been carrying a pocket knife or some form of knife since I was ten years old. Carrying pocket knives is a family tradition. Back in the day we carried pocket knives to school. I remember in the first grade we played mumbley-peg at recess. So up and through my senior year I carried one or more pocket knives.

As a professional law enforcement officer, I carried a pocket knife which could be called more of an offensive tool than a utility tool. It was a six-inch Italian “switch-blade.” It fit perfect in my uniform pocket. One dark night this “offensive tool” settled a disagreement of who should possess my sidearm. From then on, I called it my “weapon’s retention tool”. Much later on, I gave my Son this knife.

Just so I didn’t scare the bejesus out of my citizens, I also carried a Buck 110 lock back folder. I used this knife for all utility type duties such as cutting large areas of blood-soaked carpet for evidentiary purposes. The Buck 110 made it easy to find slugs in walls. You have to be careful not to touch the lead or copper jacked slugs with the blade. I love my Buck but to put an edge on this knife was time consuming.

When you have several knives, not counting the kitchen type, it can be a chore to keep them all sharp. I have a Gerber Legendary folder which has three removal blades, one saw blade, one gut blade and one straight edge blade. This knife is my go-to big game cleaning knife. After a successful hunt of deer and elk, it was time to sharpen this bad-boy.

You probably can imagine the relief when I bought my first Work Sharp tool sharpening machine. The Work Sharp tool sharpener is just one great addition to my plethora of tools. With this machine, I can sharpen more than my knives. But for the purpose of this article, I can say I love this machine which saves me many hours in my duties of keeping my cutting devices sharp. Watch the video below to see it for yourself.

Work Sharp sent a Ken Onion model sharpener to test and evaluate. For those who don’t know, there is someone somewhere does not, Ken Onion is a legendary hall-of-fame knife designer and maker. Therefore, it is only natural, Work Sharp would partner with Ken Onion and produce a knife sharpening machine which is equal to his talent.

The Ken Onion Edition Knife and Tool Sharpener is designed to sharpen every knife you own. If you also purchase the Blade Grinding Attachment for the Ken Onion Edition Knife and Tool Sharpener (works only on the Ken Onion model) you can sharpen your shovels, axes, machetes swords, chisels etc. Both the Ken Onion sharpening machine and the Blade Grinding attachment have an adjustable precision sharpening guide. This makes the proper angle of blade grind fool proof. (Disclaimer: I have not tested the Work Sharp Ken Onion machine in its operation with a fool…as of yet.) All I know, if I can easily work this machine, anyone can.

The Ken Onion Edition Knife and Tool Sharpener has many more advantages. In watching the above video, you will be familiarized with them all. But in using the fully adjustable precision sharpening guide, variable speed motor and wide, flexible abrasive belts, the Ken Onion machine will sharpen pocket and hunting knives, serrated knives, kitchen knives and any other shape or type of blade you own including gut-hook blades. The abrasive belts on this machine are ¾ inches wide by 12-inches long. The 6000 grit belt measures ½ inches by 12-inches for better contact with serrations, gut-hooks and other hard to reach edges. The adjustable guide’s angles are from 15° to 30° which will meet all of your knife sharpening chores. The variable speed runs from 1,200 SFM to 2,800 SFM (SFM is Surface Feet per Minute).

Work Sharp Review

Before I received my Ken Onion Work Sharp, I had purchased the standard Work Sharp model for my knife sharpening needs. I found this model to be an excellent product. In fact, I bragged about this machine so much, my Uncle asked me to bring it with me on my next visit. When I visited him, I took my Work Sharp machine. My Uncle Max has several kitchen knives so I had my work cut out for me. Most of his knife edges were very dull. After finishing my sharpening tasks, he was so impressed he would not allow me to leave with my Work Sharp machine. So, it was a great blessing to receive the Ken Onion model so I could continue with my sharpening duties. I will be sure to not mention to my Uncle Max about the new device.

I have many of my friends and readers ask about the best way to sharpen their knives. Well here is the answer. The Work Sharp knife sharpener and for those of you Warriors who need a more warrior like sharpener for swords and such, the Ken Onion Work Sharp machine with the Blade Grinding Attachment is the ticket. Be safe when sharpening your knives as Work Sharp will put a razor-sharp edge on all of your cutting edges.
