The very kind and supportive Henry Firearms company sent me their Henry H001L .22 caliber Carbine lever action rifle for test and evaluation (T&E). Straight out of the box I was very impressed with this .22 Carbines’ finish, workmanship, and handling. I could easily shoulder this rifle and wheel around in a tight area. This is good for hunting in wooded areas, or taking out an unwanted guest in the chicken-coop. I manipulated the lever action several times finding it smooth and flawless. The stunning wood on this rifle is typical Henry quality American walnut. The front and rear sights are my favorite with the front sight being hooded. The hood is to protect the front sight from damage and at the same time helps in sighting on a target.
For this Henry rifle I did some pre-production testing. I fired two hundred rounds of Winchester .22 long rifle without a hitch. No pre-cleaning or lubrication. Amazing. This Henry will shoot .22 short, Long and Long Rifle and .22 Stinger as well. The .22 short and long .22 rifle ammo is in short supply in the Winchester marketing closet so we had to stay with the long rifle for testing. In my personal ammo supply I have 60-year-old box of .22 short Winchester ammo my grandfather used to shoot skunks and possums on the farm. As a keepsake I did not want to use this ammo. Don’t kid yourself, this ammo will still shoot. In shooting the Winchester .22 wildcat and silvertip ammo I had zero malfunctions. All ammo worked flawlessly. I can say I love the “silvertip” .22 ammo. I have stingers too and I can say the silvertip ammo is as good or better than the CCI stingers.
A great reason for purchasing the Henry .22 Carbine would be for a .22 LR work rifle for farmers, ranchers, trappers and goat / sheep herders, and my favorite one is…..I just want one. The primary reason I gave this .22 carbine to my nephew was every young man needs to learn how to shoot a rifle. His cousins have Henry rifles as well. When they go camping with their fathers…and uncle, they can get together under adult supervision to have fun shooting cans and other objects they find on the huge sandbar on the farm. After they become men and have their own sons and daughters, one or more Henry rifles can be used to introduce their children to the great sport and fun of shooting.
Another thing I loved about the .22 carbine is it is short and light and easy to handle for youth shooters and still compatible for them as adults. I have an old Marlin Mod. 39A .22 rimfire rifle. The Marlin .22 is much heavier than its counterpart Henry. Backpacking is much easier with the Henry than with the Marlin.
If you are one who likes or needs optics on your rifles, this Henry carbine is easily accessorized with optics with a 3/8 Inch groove ring-mounts. I like Leupold rings and optics. I gave my great nephew the needed Leupold grooved 3/8-inch ring-mounts for his optics choice and Dad’s budget.
In conclusion if you are in the market for a .22 rifle for your youth or yourself, you cannot go wrong with the Henry H001L .22 lever action carbine. I highly recommend this firearm.
