First Time Owner of a Semi-auto Hunting, Target, and Zombie Eradication, Ruger AR-556 Standard Is the one.

Every time there is news, right or wrong, of the passing of legislation to ban semi-auto rifles such as the AR Style, many honest citizens decide to buy one. Ten years ago, these men and women never dreamed they would want to own an AR type semi-auto. Never-the-less, if an honest adult citizen suddenly decides to purchase an AR style rifle, then it is their right.

When I am approached by a friend or just an interested person about the purchase of an AR rifle, I tell them this old old adage, “you get what you pay for”. In the case of an AR style firearm for defense and hunting, this old adage rings 100% true. When approached and asked about buying a semi-auto rifle or any firearm, I say, “This firearm is a tool so what are you going to use it for?” Based on their answer I will make recommendations including attending some serious training. I only recommend quality proven products.

In the case of a semi-auto AR style rifle for the first-time buyer, I recommend a Ruger Standard AR-556. High quality and dependability with a decent price. You can buy cheaper, but do you want to bet your life on a “cheaper” firearm for personal protection or hunting. Personal protection from zombies would be a no-brainer wanting quality and dependability. You do not want to hear “CLICK” when you expect “BOOM”. Hunting varmints, wild pigs, or other furry-fanged-claw enhanced animals would also require quality and dependability. In hunting animals, wounding one is the last thing a good hunter wants to do. Dependability and quality of a firearm and ammo is paramount. Therefore, you want the RUGER AR-556 Standard!

In T&E of the Ruger AR-556 Standard model 8515 I asked my doctor friend Chris Shadad to help in the process. Doc wanted to experience shooting an AR rifle. He is interested purchasing one for home defense and hunting. Doc likes to hunt ducks. I told him this rifle is not suited for duck hunting. He laughed saying he was aware an AR is not for duck hunting. He said he was thinking about going on a wild hog hunt. I told him wild hog hunting is doable with a 5.56mm rifle when using the proper bullet, and shot placement. I went on to say, from a tree stand (I emphasized tree stand.) shot placement using a Hornady or Winchester 62 to 77 grain bullet to the neck or lung would take a good size hog. If you run into a 400 to 600 pounder, they are in Oklahoma, one should consider a Ruger AR 450 Bushmaster or a 350 Legend.

Doc proceeded to fire multiple rounds of Hornady, Winchester 5.56 and Browning .223. All ammo used was flawless. The Ruger Standard AR-556 Model 8515 hungerly eat everything we could feed it. From SIG I bought at a discount, their ROMEO7S 1×22 mm Red-Dot. This is an excellent optic priced right for one who needs the extra help in sighting in for a good clean shot. (See links below.) After a few mags fired, Doc started to learn the trigger action on this rifle. I could see he was grouping low left. The faster 55gr rounds will shoot low at 25 yards and begin to climb around 50 yards and peak around 100 yards. One may experience some variance with their own rifle and ammo.

SIG Romeo 7S red dot

From free standing, once we adjusted the SIG Optic, Doc began to get better groups close to center. A day trip to the bench range will finish the zeroing in the SIG Optic red-dot. Doc loved the SIG red-dot and the Ruger AR. My guess he will be buying one very soon. Watch the video and like us on Facebook. Be Blessed and be safe and watch your six.
