Ruger 15+1 Round .380 With Lower Recoil, Easy Loading for The Ladies

Late last year, 2022, Ruger introduced their 15 shot “Ruger Security .380 acp” striker-fired semi-auto pistol. The likely reason for another .380 acp being produced for the shooting public is a large demand is present. A good segment of the population who own firearms and or want to own a firearm for personal protection, are looking at the .380 acp round. Those of us who professionally carry a semi-auto firearm normally carry at a minimum a 9mm, 40 S&W, or .45 acp. Myself, I carry a .1911 45 acp. When in the land of furry things with fangs, claws, and bad attitudes, I carry a 1911 10mm. So why do many of the new firearms owners look, in their way of thinking, for the perfect semi-auto carry in the .380 acp. Caliber?

The .380 acp, .355, (acp = Automatic Colt Pistol) was developed by John Moses Browning and introduced in 1909 and adopted by Colt for their 1908 pocket hammer-less semi-auto. Other names for the .380 acp are .380 Auto, 9×17mm, 9mm Browning, 9mm Corto, 9mm Kurz, and 9mm Short. The .380 acp round is very popular around the world. It is not as powerful as the 9mm (9X19). Never the less with proper training, practice, and proper shot placement, the .380 acp is a deadly round as any flying objects which penetrate vital organs.

For those of you who are looking for a semi-auto in the .380 acp caliber, I highly suggest you take a hard and long look at Ruger’s Security .380 semi-auto. If you are looking for a semi-auto you can easily chamber a round, the Ruger Security .380 is your firearm. If you are feeling the need to bulk-up on ammo capacity to 15 rounds in each magazine, the Ruger Security .380 is your firearm.

The nice people at Ruger sent me their Security .380 model 3839 for test and evaluation. I was intrigued with the concept of the 15 round magazines. Sorry for you who do not live in a free state. I wanted to evaluate the readability of a semi-auto pistol with an easy load feature. Sense the Security 380 has a “Lite Rack™” feature, I wanted to see if the vented slide would assist in reducing the recoil of the .380 round. Sometimes, easy load equals harder recoil. I found not in this case. So basically, is the Ruger Security 380 semi-auto .380 acp functional, reliable, easy to use, light to carry, and a dependable tool for those who want to defend themselves from those who would do them harm?

A young lady I will call Jane, and I test fired the Ruger Security 380. Model 3839 which is chambered in .380 acp auto. We both agreed the Security 380 is a full-featured firearm, ideally sized, and modestly priced. Modestly priced means for about $350.00 any person who can legally own a firearm can buy a world class semi-auto pistol. If you feel you cannot afford the $350.00 then your sense of danger is very low. In other words, you live in utopia where everyone gets along and bad people do not exist.

Jane and I did most of our shooting from twenty to fifteen feet from the green person size silhouette target. We fired Hornady .380 90 gr Critical Defense, Hornady .380 90 gr. Black, Winchester .380 85 gr Silvertip, and Winchester .380 95 gr Target. Jane did very well in her shooting as she is the daughter of Gridley my partner in many of these shoots. We have had her out shooting before. She needs to work on her grip but this will come with instruction and time. At no time did Jane have a problem in loading the Ruger Security 380. Jane was able to keep 95% of the rounds in center mass. When loading Jane had no problem loading the magazines using the provided loading assist device. Jane had very positive things to say about this Ruger Security 380. She loved the feel of this Ruger in her hand. The low recoil was a big plus to her as well. The ease of loading a round gives her confidence in the event she is faced with a home invader, time being crucial.

At no time did the Ruger Security 380 fail to fire, load or eject either the Hornady or Winchester ammo provided. No jams or misfires. I agree with Jane. I found this semi-auto highly dependable. A firearm I could depend on to protect myself and family. We just had good fun shooting this pistol. We enjoyed punching holes in paper zombies. I can say without a doubt, this sample of the Ruger Security 380 is an outstanding firearm. I highly recommend it for personal protection for those sheepdogs out there protecting the sheep.

The Hornady and Winchester ammo fired is of the highest quality and world class product. How good you say? I do bet my life this ammo each day I leaving the property to go among the sheep of the world.

Ruger says it best:

“Lite Rack™ system includes refined slide serrations, pronounced cocking ears and a lighter recoil spring, allowing for easy slide manipulation. Combined with low-recoiling .380 ammunition, it is the ideal pistol for training and practice.

Compact for easy concealment, yet holds a full-sized magazine accommodating 10 or 15 rounds. Fits comfortably in the hand to better distribute recoil during practice. Lightweight slide features a drift-adjustable steel rear sight with a vertical edge and a bright, fiber optic front sight for improved visibility.    Utilizes Ruger’s safe, reliable, and proven Secure Action™ fire-control system that combines a protected internal hammer with a bladed-safety trigger. The trigger has a short, smooth pull, clean break, and positive reset.

Safety features include integrated trigger safety; external manual safety; neutrally balanced sear with significant engagement and strong spring tension; and hammer catch to help prevent the hammer from contacting the firing pin unless the trigger is pulled.

Rugged construction with through-hardened alloy steel slide; one-piece, precision-machined fire control chassis; and textured high-performance, glass-filled nylon grip frame with accessory rail. Safe, easy take-down with no special tools or trigger pull required.”

The Ruger Security 380 firearm is highly dependable, effective, and perfect for those who need a CCW firearm for person protection. I highly recommend this firearm for anyone who has the desire to protect themselves and others around them.
