Recently I solo backpacked into the desert canyon country of southwest Colorado. A vast land of semi-arid country of adventure and beauty. My intent was to get away from the world and clear my mind, and at the same time test the Ruger New Super Blackhawk Bisley in the .480 Ruger caliber. A Warrior’s hand-cannon for sure. After a hike into an area of high walled escarpments, I chose my camping spot and setup my four-season one Warrior tent. I then ventured up the nearby hill to inspect areas for some canned photo shots and potential article related shots. Night time was approaching quickly, so this was a short distance recon.
As I walked through the brush and Piñon Pine I was toting my Ruger Bisley .480. Back in camp was my fixed blade Utica UTKS-4 and Dan Winkler Wild Bill tomahawk both attached to my backpack. The molle-carry systems for the Utica and Winkler were designed for attachment to vests or backpacks. While walking I was thinking a good quality short sword or machete would be very complimentary to my 1880 Bianchi gun belt. You just never know when you will run into a bear or lion. Five shots and it is claws, teeth and cold steel time.
I walked another 20 yards on up the incline and noticed what looked to be a recent digging under a bolder. The flung out dirt was still moist. I figured a badger. I walked on up to face the earthworks and saw a hole I could crawl in. A hole which could accommodate my 225 pound frame. Not yet over the shock of the size of this excavation endeavor, I heard with no mistake the warning growl of a bear. No bear tag, not bear season and possibly a female bear with half grown cubs, I pulled my Ruger from its Bianchi Lawman holster and backed away. The bear didn’t come out and believe he or she made a good decision.
That night I slept 75 yards from the bear den. The bear didn’t bother me and I didn’t go calling on her or him. The next morning I went over in my mind the incident of the past evening. I decided if hostilities had broken out, a good complement to this Ruger single action pistol would be a heavy duty short to medium machete.
Now back in civilized, too civilized, country I researched and found TOPS has the perfect short machete. The Yacare 10.0 TOPS machete falls within the medium to heavy class range. The Yacare 10.0 was born out of trekking through the jungles of Central American. TOPS General Manager Craig Powell is such an adventurer. During his many adventures he has seen the need for and has formulated the design of the Yacare 10.0. Other TOPS knives were born out of a realized need, such as Brakimo, Tanimboca and Puukko. As a LEO, the TOPS “Felony Stop” fixed blade knife is my favorite for duty.
As I am known to partake in an adventure from time to time, I hope to acquire one of the Yacare 10.0 to test and write about. I believe this shorter machete is one of the top five in the world. I base this on the TOPS Brand and quality which is one of the top five knife making companies in the world. Also, I have a Central American made short machete which is very handy. This machete is too light for serious situations where the user is depending on this tool for survival. I like the fact the Yacare 10.0 tips the scales in at around 22 ounces which is a good weight for carrying and use. The added weight over the Central American machete I own, will drive the blade deeper into cutting vines and saplings. The added weight will also will be driven deeper into hairy fur-balls with big teeth, large claws and bad breath.
The blade length is 10.25 inches long of my favorite 1095 carbon steel. This is a perfect length for close in work when cutting vines and such in confined areas. Swinging an 18 inch full size machete in tight areas makes the job at hand more difficult. I take care of my tools and my cutting tools are no exception. If you leave the Yacare 10.0 stuck in a stump for three months, it will begin to rust. But getting it wet in a rain forest or hiking in the rainy season of Washington State will be no problem. I would just start out with a thin coat of oil or lubrication on the blade and all will be good. As for the Yacare 10.0 handle it is made from Black Canvas Micarta which is very tough material. This handle will take a beating and keep going. The Yacare 10.0 comes with a very well-constructed Black ballistic nylon sheath. I highly recommend the TOPS Yacare 10.0.
